Flash on iPhone – not anytime soon 0

Sep27

Although there were rumors in January that Flash on the iPhone would become a reality before the year was over, Adobe has confirmed that Flash capabilities won’t be coming to the iPhone anytime soon. “It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating,” CEO Shantanu Narayen recently told Bloomberg Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.”

Flash is most commonly used to play videos on sites like YouTube and Hulu, and provides advanced interactivity and animation to the Web. Despite its popularity, however, Flash has been conspicuously absent from the iPhone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has previously said that Flash was not good enough for the iPhone. Dismissing regular Flash as too slow for the iPhone, and Flash Lite-Adobe’s version for mobile phones-as not “advanced enough”. There has also been some speculation that the biggest barrier to Flash is that it technically violates the iPhone’s Terms of Service.

Since Apple released its iPhone Software Development Kit,  Adobe has put much effort into developing Flash for the iPhone. Although, Adobe announced that other mobile platforms such as Google’s Android and Windows Mobile are about to be Flash capable-it would seem that Flash for the iPhone is still just a pipe-dream. This likely will be pitched as an advantage over the iPhone by its competitors.
